Aquatic and Recreational Signage
Standards Australia has developed guidelines for the design and application of water signs (AS/NZS 2416:2010). These signs have been thoroughly researched and evaluated and perform well in terms of recall and recognition.
Effective signage is important for a number of reasons:
- It informs users of dangers, safety issues and other relevant information;
- It provides stakeholders and PCBU’s with some protection against litigation as a result of the duty of care owed to users regarding any dangers, prohibitions or other safety matters;
- It provides a cost effective alternative to employing a person to stand at every access point or hazard to warn patrons of the dangers.
PCBU’s have an obligation to alert potential users to the underlying or foreseen risks at a particular location, this is best accomplished via a process of:
- Engaging a qualified aquatic risk and safety consultant;
- Conducting a risk assessment of the site;
- Make recommendations;
- Procure or produce the signage; and
- Installation of the signage.
