Confined Spaces
As the Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU), specific risks in relation to a confined space, must be managed within the workplace. These include, but are not limited to:
- Controlling access via a confined spaces entry permit;
- Signage;
- Communication;
- Standby and emergency procedures; and
- Risk assessment specific to the space and task.
Whilst designers, importers, suppliers and manufacturers have a standard duty to eliminate and or minimise entry into a confined space (so far as is reasonably practicable), working in a confined space has the potential to increase the risk of injury from a number of factors including;
- Noise;
- Being overcome by fumes, gases or oxygen depletion;
- Drowning;
- Extreme temperatures;
- Manual handling and slips, trips and falls.
PCBUs must manage all of these risks in addition to any associated hazards. Furthermore, certain procedures must be developed, implemented and practiced to safeguard employees and or permit holders within your workplace.
